PRESS RELEASE:
HyMoCARES Project – Alpine rivers are working for us
To find out how, and to quantify what services well-managed watercourses are able to offer, 13 organizations from 6 European countries have started the HyMoCARES project (HydroMorphological assessment and management at basin scale for the Conservation of Alpine Rivers and related Ecosystem Services), co-funded by the Interreg Alpine Space Programme.
Its aim is to make clear that rivers are not only flows of water but also of sediments and that water bodies managed more naturally, reducing alterations and discontinuities, represent a key resource that can ensure valuable Ecosystem Services. Among them, mitigation of flood risk, groundwater recharge, conservation of biodiversity and of landscape and recreational values.
A river with well-managed water and sediments positively influences local economy and the welfare of Alpine population.
HyMoCARES will actively involve public and private entities from all partner countries, developing operational tools and carrying out several pilot interventions.
